BGF and J&B Recycling

In 2014, we provided Hartlepool-based business J&B Recycling with £7.5m of growth capital. Alongside investing, we introduced J&B Recycling to its non-executive chair, Ross Smith. Ross is the former-CEO of MDC Technology and chair of IoT connectivity group CSL Dualcom. We further supported J&B Recycling to strengthen its management team and board, with the appointment of finance and operations directors.

Our backing enabled J&B Recycling to expand its facilities for treating commercial and household waste, including purchasing two more recycling sites, doubling its capacity in total. The company also invested heavily in state-of-the-art, automated sorting machines, and adopted new engineering and process optimisation techniques. J&B Recycling now processes over 160,000 tonnes of recycling each year, and has successfully established itself as one of the UK’s leading materials recovery sites.

After seven years in partnership with BGF, having grown revenues more than 200% during this time, J&B Recycling was acquired by the UK subsidiary of Spanish firm Urbaser—the third-largest environmental services provider in Europe. The exit generated a 2.4x money multiple (MM) return on BGF’s initial investment.
