BGF Foundation: ‘tis the season for making a difference!

Alongside volunteering days, five staff-nominated charities have now also been awarded £1,000 grants from the BGF Foundation.

23 December 2024

As the year comes to a close, the BGF Foundation are unwrapping some more impactful moments from 2024. While not a full playlist, read on for a few of their greatest hits — from championing local causes to empowering more young people across the UK.

Staff grants: small charities, big impact

This month, the BGF Foundation launched its first Community Grants round, enabling BGF team members to nominate charities they care about for £1,000 grants.

The process was intentionally simple and fair, placing no demands on charity resources. The staff-nominated charities were reviewed using a blind RAG rating system by two independent reviewers. The charities with the highest average scores were then selected.

BGF employees provided the necessary details, and the Foundation managed all due diligence. Charities weren’t burdened with extra paperwork, like impact reports — only bank details were required to process the grants. This streamlined approach ensured that smaller charities, often short on capacity, could benefit without barriers.

We’re thrilled to announce the five staff-nominated charities that ‘sleighed’ it this Christmas, being awarded £1,000 grants from the BGF Foundation:

  • The Movement is a London-based charity, focused on empowering women with multiple disadvantages to overcome barriers to — and benefit from — exercise.
  • Sparkles is a Buckinghamshire-based charity, providing support to children with Down syndrome and their families.
  • CDH UK helps families affected by congenital diaphragmatic hernia with vital support and resources.
  • Mission Christmas in Scotland works to ensure that no child wakes up without a gift on Christmas morning.
  • Cumbernauld & Kilsyth Care is a Scottish charity that addresses food insecurity and extreme poverty, and supports vulnerable families.

Paul talks pounds with MyBnk

Paul Stevens, our Head of Quoted Investments, recently hosted a virtual lunch and learn for 19 trainers from MyBnk, a financial education charity and BGF Foundation grantee. Covering the basics of investing, Paul demystified a topic that can often feel out of reach, to help them tackle big money questions from young people.

Following the session, one of the MyBnk trainers commented: “What a good introduction to investing, Paul! Thank you for spending time understanding our learning needs and putting together a relevant session. We really appreciate you presenting!”

Scam-savvy kids

Throughout 2024, 14 other BGF employees (across four of our offices) also volunteered with MyBnk Collectively, they spent 60 hours helping Year 6 students learn how to detect and handle digital scams.

These sessions provided the children with practical tools to navigate an increasingly digital world. One BGF volunteer summed it up: “It was great to see the kids grow more confident in understanding scams. It felt like we were really equipping them for the future!”

As the holiday season reminds us of the power of generosity, we’re grateful to everyone who contributed to these highlights — from the BGF Foundation team and our volunteers to the charities we’ve partnered with. Together, we’ve unwrapped opportunities, sparked conversations, and made a difference in young people’s lives.
